Mulled wine Cyprus style

Mulled wine Cyprus style

Mulled wine is an alcoholic wine-based beverage that is served hot or warm. It is traditionally consumed during winter, especially around Christmas holidays. Its rich aroma of the spices and citrus inspires cozy get-togethers with your family or friends — ideally in front of a fireplace.

Traditional mulled wine is made using dry red wine (because you are going to have to heat it up, less expensive wine is usually the most appropriate choice), sugar, nutmeg, cloves and water. Variations include adding orange or lemon peel, cinnamon, chopped apples, dried fruits, anise and even honey. We are going to share a recipe that is commonly used in Cyprus.

Ingredients

1 bottle of dry red wine

6-7 whole cloves

Nutmeg to taste

1 tablespoon of sugar

150-200 ml of water

Cooking method

Mix the spices with water, bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes. In a separate bowl heat up the wine, but be careful not to boil it. As soon as the wine becomes warm, add the spicy water and 1 tablespoon of sugar. If you wish, you can also add lemon peel and other optional ingredients.

Remember to peel your apples, if you plan on adding them to your recipe. How do you know when to remove the wine from heat? You can do so as soon as the white foam disappears from the wine’s surface. Mulled wine tastes the best when it is approximately 70 °С warm.
